Will Mar Roxas give way to Noynoy?

Senator Mar Roxas is definitely thinking long and hard the past few days. He’s worked a lot to build up his candidacy for President in 2010 and I’m sure he’s spent a considerable amount of money already especially on media buys for his 30 second commercials on prime time television. However, despite all of his hard work he hasn’t really made a huge impact on the surveys by Pulse Asia and SWS. In fact, his numbers declined slightly during the last report. Even with the second wave of commercials and all the hype on his wedding with Korina, he still didn’t manage to pull within striking distance of the top 2 placers.

Noynoy Aquino – the Reluctant Leader?
On the other hand we have Senator Noynoy Aquino who’s political stock shot up after the outpouring of support for his family when former President Cory Aquino passed away. Here we have a Senator who still has to pay his dues and yet public support is building up for him pretty fast. In fact other politicians have already pledged their support for Noynoy should he run, including fellow Liberal Party member Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan. Pampanga Governor Ed Panlilio also expressed his intent to back out from the race to support Noynoy should he decide to run.

Call it fate or circumstance, Senator Noynoy Aquino stands to make a historical decision that will definitely change the political landscape of the country. He has the best chance of uniting the Liberal Party and maybe even get the support of other groups.

Mar’s Sacrifice?
I’ve met and talked with Senator Roxas on several occasions and I can confidently say that this guy has a heart for service and he’s really competent. He knows what to do should he get elected in 2010. I can’t imagine how hard it is for him to think about having to back out and slide down to Senator Aquino – the guy who’s not even sure if he wants it or if he can do a good job. It’s like staring at the opposite ends of the spectrum. Mar is the guy prepared, willing, and has invested so much already. Noynoy is the guy who has no preparations whatsoever, not willing, has no investments, but has the support of the public.

It’s definitely going to be interesting to see how this all plays out. I can’t imagine Noynoy bolting out of the party if he doesn’t get picked as the standard bearer. I also can’t bear to see Mar’s reaction if the party decides to put him as their VP and Nonoy as the President.
