What is Off Limits in a Campaign?

A few weeks ago, Kris Aquino publicly cried on national television when her personal marital problems would be used to drag down the name of his brother, Senator Noynoy Aquino. A lot of people called that off limits since it was “personal”. Even before that though, the daughter of Senator Manny Villar was also publicly chastised as she gave away scholarships and prizes during a Villar-sponsored concert. Off limits? But wait, there’s more. I just saw a tweet linking to an article on the Philippine Star wherein the author of the piece actually researched the statements made on Villar’s ad with his brother Danny dying due to lack of funds. According to the article, this wasn’t true.

In a political campaign, what’s off limits and what’s fair game?

There’s really no sure answer but ultimately politicians fail to realize that they are the ones who are drawing first blood when it comes to engagements like this. You use your daughter, sister, and even your dead brother on a political campaign then they become fair game. The moment you have them prance around the stage, you are exposing them to a world of hurt, humiliation, and scrutiny.

It’s basic competitive marketing 101. You have a claim, then make sure that it will stand against criticism. The problem here is that instead of hyping on product benefits, politicians prefer to shove their loved ones in the line of fire. Since their competitors can’t hit on product benefits, they will tear down at the people in front of them. This is the sad and brutal truth of politics.

Don’t just think twice, think a million times before you ask your children or your loved ones if they want to participate in your campaign, especially if it’s a heated contest. And before you start pointing at your competitor for going to “off-limits” areas, look at yourself first and ask yourself why those people are in the ring anyway.

  1. There are some politicians and campaign consultants who believe that nothing is off limits in campaigning as long as it “scores points for your team.” I’m not one of them, personally.

While I think it’s fine to bring up points about your opponent’s policies, I always get disgusted when I see campaigns–regardless of which party–focus on an opponent’s family life and other personal things. These things will always be off limits in my book.

Good post; this isn’t a topic that campaign buffs discuss often enough. Keep up the great work!

  2. Look deep inside you and feel the pain…..suriin nyong mabuti kung sino dapat ang manalo ng pagkapresidente. We should condemed politicians who continue to exploit the poor children of our country. We expect situations like this if Noynoy, Villar, Gibo, and especially if Erap wins the presidency.

this came from the comments (Philstar). this writer brought up a good point. How much more proof do we need to justify that NOnoy is crazy.

“When people who have known you personally since childhood speaks out to confirm little known facts about you, then it is just right that we stop and listen.. And when a sufficient number of people confirm these facts about you, there is no need for any official records to at least consider the probability that they are indeed telling the truth..
Ernesto Maceda lived with Ninoy Aquino and family in Boston during their exile years. It was Maceda who first raised the status of Noynoy’s mental and emotional health in his newspaper column about two months ago.. Several personalities from Tarlac have insinuated the same.. And for you Noynoy fanatics to continue dismissing these disturbing news about your idol as hogwash is doing your country a great disservice..
Ballsy confirmed that Noynoy is just now coming out of his shell.. Read between the lines.. We don’t not need a rocket scientist to figure out what this statement really meant.. Kris was also quoted as saying she does not want Noynoy to get married ever. If this does not imply anything alarming about Noynoy’s ability to handle permanent relationship, or reflect his emotional as well as mental health then I don’t know what does..
Study the man.. He never got married.. He never had a history of long term relationships.. He was under his mother’s skirt from birth until her death.. He was never trusted with any major responsibility by his family.. He never accomplished anything on his own.. Instead of him acting as head of the family, it was the other way around, siya ang tumatayong bunso.. Even the youngest sister likes to manage and control his personal affairs..
Kung hindi niyo man lang bigyan ng kaukulang atensyon itong seryosong bagay na ito tungkol sa inyong kandidato, then masahol pa kayo sa idol niyo.. I would be justified in saying, you people are totally hopeless..”
