What an American said about the Ondoy “Bayanihan”

Here’s something to cheer everyone up. An American who lives here witnessed what was happening and gave this statement:

“I wish you all could see the amazing community spirit, charity and compassion in the Phils. What I see happening here totally blows away the response to hurricane Katrina. People here have less to give, yet they’re giving ABUNDANTLY. There’s such a greater story than just the ‘death toll’ that the lame american media fails to capture.”

    Yan tayong mga PINOY!!!!

  6. Louie says:

There is hardly or no one else to depend to but ourselves. Our gov’t and it’s system aren’t efficient enough to cover a large scale natural disaster as we’ve always been through in the past.

  7. rowie says:

I’m inspired by the bayanihan spirit, but not at all surprised. Bayanihan really is one of the best things in our culture. We may fight and bicker at other times, but when the chips are down, we don’t dilly-dally: we pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and get busy helping one another to carry houses.

  8. gemini says:

in as much as we’re proud and happy of the bayanihan spirit of the people, i feel as much frustration with the creeping apathy we have with our goverment such how we’re pretty much blase and accepted that they’re inefficient and corrupt. i wish more people will have greater indignation on this and really voice this out come may 2010.

  22. Will says:

Yeah, Americans NEVER helps you poor Philippines folks. Forget the facts that more than half of you know what a Red Cross on a box of powdered Milk looks like. Forget World War 2 or what Americans did then to help against the Japanese. You place a lot of importance on your half assed idea of what charity is than what it really means to be charitable. You will forget in a minute, any support you receive this time anyways. Like Janet Jackson says, what have you done for me lately! Actually there are more groups here in America giving to charity than even your own Government gives to you. Wise up and learn what’s the truth. Go to CHURCH and PRAY. You have forgotten GOD and look to insult others in to giving more than they can afford. You can’t prosper with a bad attitude like that. It only leads you to ruin and damnation. Americans LOVE the people of the Philippines. No place else on Earth are there more Philippine people other than your Home Country. To complain about America when you have problems there is total hypocrisy and stupidity. You few who do it make the rest of your Countrymen look bad. Stop it. Be grateful for ANY support you get from others and thank God you didn’t suffer as so many others there have. Roll up your sleeves and get to work and quit expecting ME (America) to fix your problems for you. I ALWAYS help, but it’s up to YOU to get it done.

  34. josellene says:

makes me proud to have been part of the Bayanihan that i did for the time being that classes were suspended… though there were no physical rewards, having to see the typhoon survivors smile and hope for a brighter tomorrow.. is a great reward in itself already.. glad to be a pinoy… KEEP ON THRIVING!

  35. bon says:

will, are we criticizing the USA here? maybe only one did- the American guy…but the Filipinos commenting here never made a criticism against US..so, maybe you were just being insecure or paranoid with your overeaction, Will

  36. Quen says:

Ya, probably we forgot to thank the other countries who extended their help to our fellow Filipinos. It’s not just us, Filipinos, who have the spirit of Bayanihan but it’s also present in our brothers and sisters abroad. Our school received financial assistance all the way from Australia, Germany, and of course U.S. is helping us. So they also deserve a big clap! and a million thanks! God bless and peace to all!

  37. merlinjeng says:

yan ang pinoy eh. paratangan man tayong mga kurakot, paratangan man tayong mga walang disiplina pag dating naman sa kawang-gawa hindi mo matatwaran. Probably one of the best traits we Filipino’s should be proud of…Nakangiti pa rin despite the fact that natural calamities like these, often strikes our country…Dugong Pinoy eh….hindi madaling sumuko, hindi madaling gumuho…
