Rename Batasan Pambansa to Hollywood

I’m very concerned with how the Philippines is voting for their legislators. Other than Bong Revilla, Lito Lapid, Jinggoy Estrada, and Tito Sotto making the Senate, there are also several movie stars who won seats in the lower house. I just heard that Lucy Torres-Gomez, wife of Richard Gomez, won as Congresswoman for the 4th District of Leyte. There’s also our favorite boxing star Manny Pacquiao who won in the lone district of Saranggani. Imagine how Arum will introduce him in the next press conference? “World champion and… congressman!” Whut? But wait, there’s more! There’s also the wife of Senator Bong Revilla, Lani Mercado, who won for Congress in Cavite. There’s also Dan Fernandez, another movie actor.

We need more credible, competent, and professional people in Congress because if this trend continues then Batasan will become a local Hollywood of sorts. There were more movie stars who tried their luck for local positions and won all over the country. The next stepping stone for them will probably be national positions.

If you guys will really vote for movie stars, please scrutinize and check their track record and experience. You are literally entrusting the fate of your city, district, province, town, or country to them for the next 3-6 years. Make wise decisions.

As I said on FB, it’s about name recall. But to put it in context, two decades ago it was difficult for people who were not part of the traditional landed aristocracy to enter politics. Like it or not, showbiz candidates are actually a sign of democratization.
