Why not Puno?

I’ve been reading the latest articles on Inquirer.Net and I was really amused with how some administration veterans are reacting to Puno’s bid for the Vice Presidency. Two high ranking officials have already publicly stated that they would prefer it if Batangas Governor Vilma Santos was to become Sec. Gilbert Teodoro’s running mate. This makes perfect sense since I find both Puno and Teodoro to be insanely boring at times. They lack charisma, passion, and life. I’d love to see them become more “human”. With Santos as Teodoro’s running mate, she’ll be able to put some kick into the campaign.

Not just because she’s a celebrity
One thing going for Ate Vi is that other than being popular she also has a credible background in governance. I don’t live in Batangas but from what I hear she’s been doing a good job. I’m sure she’s a sure win if she decides against running for VP and sticks to her original intention of just seeking reelection. Puno, on the other hand, is painted as a very traditional and old-fashioned politician. Ever since he declared his bid, he’s been getting a lot of criticism from various sides of the political arena – both administration and opposition.

What’s interesting to note is that people are desperate for someone else to the point that Sec. Ebdane’s name is being floated as a possible running mate for Teodoro instead of Puno. Is he really that bad? Hahaha!

Here’s the article on Inquirer for everyone’s reading pleasure:

MANILA — Who’s afraid of a Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino-Manuel “Mar” Roxas tandem?

Not the administration’s Lakas-Kampi-CMD party, especially if it could convince Batangas Gov. Vilma Santos to be the running-mate of its standard-bearer, Secretary Gilbert Teodoro.

Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita, interim party president, said on Wednesday that a Teodoro-Santos ticket would be a good match to the Aquino-Roxas tandem of the Liberal Party.

He said Santos could complement Teodoro’s improving popularity — as purportedly shown in a recent unofficial survey — with her own, considering that she is a veteran actress with years of experience in local government.

“Why not?” he told reporters, reacting to the possibility of fielding Teodoro and Santos against Aquino and Roxas.

“It is one thing to have charisma and to be in tandem with someone who can push you up. So the benefit is mutual,” he said in Filipino.

Santos has indicated that she preferred to seek reelection in Batangas. But Prospero Pichay, a Lakas-Kampi vice president, has said the party was still “courting” her.

So far, Ermita said the party was supporting the “endorsement” of Interior Secretary Ronaldo Puno as Teodoro’s running mate. But he left the door open for Santos, with the choice of Puno yet to be ratified in a party convention.

“Between now and that period of ratification by the national convention, we could expect that things can happen,” he said.

Ermita, however, all but ruled out the possibility of the party dropping Teodoro as its standard-bearer.

The name of Public Works Secretary Hermogenes Ebdane was floated on Wednesday as a possible presidential bet, courtesy of a paid newspaper advertisement portraying him as an unassuming “action man.”

In the ad, Mayor Juanito Alipao of Alimodian, Iloilo, thanked Ebdane for visiting his far-flung town and ordering the construction of a bridge as part of Edbane’s countryside development program.

The ad screamed in bold letters: “Di kaya si Jun Ebdane ang Tamang Daan sa 2010?”

Ermita slammed the door on a possible Ebdane presidential run under Lakas-Kampi. At most, he said the Cabinet official was free to join the party.

“As far as the party is concerned, we have already chosen our candidate,” he said. “He should understand that there was already a selection process.”

A giddy Ermita reported the preliminary results of a nationwide survey among presidential contenders, supposedly showing a vast improvement in Teodoro’s rating.

He said Teodoro was now near the top in the survey that also included former President Estrada, Vice President Noli De Castro, and Senators Francis Escudero, Loren Legarda and Richard Gordon.

Ermita said the unofficial results were given to Malacañang last Sunday and were yet to include the ratings of Senators Manuel Villar and Aquino.

“Can you imagine that among the frontrunners, Secretary Teodoro is already next to Senator Escudero and even higher than the others who used to rate high?” he said. “The figures are not yet in but he is already very near to President Erap (Estrada).”

“You’ll be amazed how fast (his rating) has improved,” he added.

Ermita said Teodoro’s rating was likely buoyed by his televised responses to queries on national issues during the Lakas-Kampi executive committee meeting last week.

Ermita called for regular debates among presidential aspirants, confident that Teodoro would perform well.

“Intelligent voters can see through (the candidates),” he said. “I know this call will not fall on deaf ears because we need to know who is most deserving to run our country.”

Puno said in a recent press release that the party should have a national convention to decide who should be the VP for Teodoro.

Sounds like MMDA Chairman Bayani Fernando.

How DFA Sec. Romulo changed the landscape for 2010

Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo recently shared with some members of the press that he will be supporting Senator Noynoy Aquino of the Liberal Party come the 2010 Presidential Elections. This was supposed to have been private but somehow it was leaked and it ended up being the headline for broadsheets and online publications. Following his announcement, Palace officials quickly reacted by saying that everyone in their team should support their standard bearer, Secretary Gilbert Teodoro.

Romulo’s declaration of support for Noynoy has two major implications:

1. Shows the undying power and legacy of the Aquino’s.
2. Opening of Pandora’s Box for defections

First, I find the staying power of the Aquino family amazing. Senator Ninoy Aquino’s passion for the country propelled his wife to the Presidency, and it also is giving his son, Noynoy, a fighting chance in 2010. Not only that, but the loyalty of the family’s supporters is still there. It must have been a very difficult decision for Romulo to admit publicly that he’d be supporting Aquino in 2010. I admire his courage and conviction for that.

Next, Romulo’s declaration is a massive and symbolic gesture. He’s a senior official that’s highly respected on and out of the administration camp. I’m sure that his declaration will spur other cabinet members and administration politicians to start thinking about jumping ship.

I’m pretty sure that other parties are smelling blood in the water and have started their recruitment/pirating drive against the administration. It’s inevitable that people will move parties. The question now is how many will they have left after the feeding frenzy is over.

Susan “Toots” Ople offered a Senate Slot

If there’s one thing I noticed, it’s that almost all the politicians these days are saying that they’re the allies of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs). This is mainly because there are 10,000,000 OFWs and they have the power to influence the votes of their families back home. If there’s one figure that really deserves to be called a champion of OFWs, it’s former USEC. Susan “Toots” Ople. Having worked with her for several projects, I can really say that she has the heart for our Kababayans who are struggling abroad. In an article in Inquirer, it’s revealed that she’s been offered a slot in the Senatorial line-up of several opposition parties.

Based on the article below, there’s talk going around that the offer came from Senator Chiz Escudero’s NPC.

Ople child offered Senate ticket slot

CITY OF MALOLOS, Bulacan — An opposition party has asked the youngest daughter of the late Senator Blas Ople to join its lineup for the Senate in the 2010 elections.

Susan Ople, 46, who chairs the Ople Policy Center, a non-government organization helping overseas Filipino workers and laborers, said she has started consulting people close to her and her group to help her decide.

Ople, whose father also served as labor minister and foreign affairs secretary, said she could not name the politician who sought her and the party that the official represents because that person has yet to announce his candidacy.

A source close to her, however, said it was the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC).

Ople, a native of Hagonoy, Bulacan, was appointed by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in 2004 as labor undersecretary. She, however, resigned following various controversies that rocked the Arroyo administration.

She said she preferred to lead the Ople Policy Center’s advocacy in helping OFWs, workers and labor unions “without the clout and color of politics.”

Should she decide to run for senator, Ople said she would author laws to protect workers.

Ople, known to family and friends by her nickname “Toots,” holds a master’s degree in public administration from the Kennedy School of Government in Harvard University, where she received the Josephine Vernon Award of Excellence.
Carmela Reyes, Inquirer Central Luzon

And we have my second candidate that I’m sure in voting for the Senate come 2010.

(Author’s Note: I’m related to Susan Ople. She’s the sister of my father.)

Senator Roxas’ speech declaring his VP bid

This morning the Liberal Party had a press conference at Club Filipino. I passed by Club last night and there were actually media people already parked outside (OB Vans). Anyway, in the press conference, Liberal Party standard bearer Senator Noynoy Aquino introduced party president Senator Mar Roxas. In his speech, Senator Roxas finally accepted Noynoy’s invitation to be his running mate in 2010. It’s official: it’s a Noynoy Aquino-Mar Roxas tandem for the Liberal Party.

The girlfriends of both Mar and Noynoy were not present during the event. Makes me wonder why.

Here’s the speech of Senator Roxas which was provided to me by one of his staff, Rose Romero:

Maraming maraming salamat po sa inyong lahat. Magandang tanghali po. Happy Holidays to our Muslim brothers.

Salamat, Noynoy, sa tiwalang ipinagkaloob mo sa akin. Salamat sa karangalang maging kasama mo sa paglilingkod sa bayan. Thank you for this opportunity to work with you as we raise the banner of reform. Thank you for the privilege of joining you and all our kababayans in the fight for decency and integrity in public service, and for a government that puts the people’s interest first.

But this fight is not just about Noynoy and me. It’s bigger than the two of us, it is bigger than the Liberal Party. It is about our collective thirst for change.

It is about our thirst for change finally overcoming those who want to continue the tayu-tayo system, the horse-trading, the greed, the self-interest, the transactional politics that has been the biggest roadblock to progress and prosperity for all.

Tungkol ito sa matuwid laban sa baluktot. Tungkol ito sa tapat laban sa tiwali. Tungkol ito sa tama laban sa mali.

Noy, you have raised the banner.

My friends, this is going to be a tough battle. We should not be lulled into complacency. We are up against forces who will fight tooth and nail, fair and unfair, legal and illegal, against us.

Our opponents will exhaust all avenues in order to win. They have been robbing us for so long, and they want to continue robbing us.

I am honored to join him in this field of battle.

To all of us here in this hall and all across this great nation, who are fighting alongside him, make no mistake about it: We will not back down from this fight, not now, not ever.

The fog of cynicism has already lifted from our hearts. Ngayon, puwede na muling mangarap.

Sama-sama tayo. Hindi namin kayo pababayaan. Lalaban tayo!

I haven’t made up my mind yet who I will vote for as President but I’m definitely throwing my full support for Senator Mar Roxas for Vice President in 2010.

“HINDI NGA!!!” – Vice President Noli De Castro

“Sabihin mo sa kanila tamad sila! Hindi sila pwede hindi nagbabayad! Sisingilin ko sila. Papaalisin ko pag di sila nagbabayad!” That’s exactly what Vice President Noli De Castro said on national television when he was being interviewed about the protest actions of several individuals during one of his sorties in the provinces. His anger was even more evident when he was asked to confirm if he was running as VP under Senator Villar’s Nacionalista Party. De Castro brutally blurted out “HINDI NGA!”.

Here’s the video for your viewing “pleasure”:

First, let me just stand with De Castro on the idea that people should be responsible for the loans that they get from the government. If they availed of the low cost housing programs, they should do their best to find ways to be able to pay the agreed amortization on time. You cannot just blame the government if you’re not making money. You have to find ways.

However, let me just voice out my disappointment in De Castro’s mannerisms. He’s always been known to be a cool cat, always calm and composed. It’s sad to see him finally break under this pressure. I kinda feel for the guy since he’s been really focused on housing and he gets protests like this as his “thank you”. That’s not an excuse though to go berserk like that. He should have conducted himself better seeing as he is the Vice President of the Philippines.

Coffee Session with NBN-ZTE Whistle Blower Joey De Venecia

I was invited to go to a blogger coffee session with Joey De Venecia by Ricky Rivera and Ding Gagelonia. The event was held in Annabelle’s restaurant along Tomas Morato (same place as where Mar Roxas had his first blogger event). It was initially a bit dragging since we barely got to discuss any issue at length with Joey because there was a lengthy debate about Poll Automation. I actually found myself zoning out and was contemplating on how I could butt in to ask my questions. Anyway, I got my chance and I was able to fire off a few queries.

Here are bullet points of what we discussed:

- Joey is running for the Senate in 2010. He’s not yet sure what party he’ll be joining but it will definitely be opposition.

- His father, JDV, promised support to Senator Manny Villar prior to former President Aquino’s death. I wonder if he’ll still push for Villar with Noynoy coming into the picture? I’ll definitely monitor developments on this one. No mention of FVR during the talk.

- He shared with us that there were people in the opposition talking about a PEOPLE POWER COALITION. This is an alliance of several opposition parties which will probably back up Senator Noynoy Aquino of the Liberal Party. This move reminds me a lot of his JDV who used his diplomacy skills to form the RAINBOW COALITION in the House of Representatives when he was the Speaker.

180920091248

- If he’s elected, the first thing he’ll do the morning right after he takes his oath is to file criminal cases against President Arroyo and the first gentleman. I think just by saying this in forums he’ll be able to get a lot of votes, haha. :P

- In terms of legislative priorities, he’ll file bills that will strengthen the local government. He wants LGU’s to have more control over their budgets.

- He’ll also look into how we do debt servicing. Apparently there’s a way we can nullify some debts so we can free up budget to do other things. According to him, 30% of the annual budget automatically goes to paying off our debts.

Will I vote for him? I’m not yet 100%. However, he did strike me as a person hell bent on making the current administration pay for their crimes. I wish I had more time to talk to him about other topics so I could get to know him some more. 95% of the discussion during the evening really revolved around poll automation.

Looking forward to another blogger event with this guy.

Joey De Venecia will run for Senator in 2010

I just came from a blogger coffee session with NBN-ZTE whistle blower Joey De Venecia. I’ll write about the coffee session and what we discussed in detail in a separate post. For now, let me just share with everyone that he told us that he’s planning on running for the Senate in 2010 but he’s yet to make a decision on what party he’ll be joining. It will definitely be the opposition but no word yet on which particular party.

I’ll try to post what we discussed during the blogger session in a while.

Women’s Rights in Schools

While the rest of the country is talking about how former President Erap Estrada is slugging it out with Senator Panfilo Lacson, allow me to talk about one pressing issue that caught my attention. An article was forwarded to me on Facebook just this morning about how women are being unjustly treated by the schools here in the Philippines. Apparently the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines wants be exempted from several provisions of the Magna Carta law for Women. Based on the implementing rules and regulations of the said law, unwed mothers who are treated unfairly in schools (be it teachers or students), can file charges and claim damages. This is because we’ve had several cases already of students and teachers being dismissed from schools because they’re single mothers.

According to the article:

Monsignor Gerardo Santos, national president of the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines (CEAP), said the CEAP would ask that a provision on such an exemption be inserted into the new law’s implementing rules and regulations.

He said the chairman of the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd), Emmanuel Angeles, has said he would support the CEAP’s participation in the writing of the IRR.

“It is important that we respect the religious affiliation of these institutions, the schools, or company the persons [concerned] belong to,” Santos told the CEAP national convention at the Manila Hotel.

Let me just express my disappointment over the position of the CEAP. Unwed single mothers have the same rights as any other person in the country. They should not be discriminated or persecuted. They already have the daunting task of raising their child alone and yet you want to make it even harder for them? I personally know a lot of single parents and I admire them for their tenacity and resilience. They work two-three times harder than the average person and the love that they have for their kids is just heart-melting. It’s sad that all of their sacrifices might get thrown out the door just because of them not being married.

I’m not saying that we should roll out the red carpet and attend to all the needs of single parents. I just don’t agree with the idea of making life even harder for them. Life is already difficult because of their circumstance and society wants to pull them down even further. It’s just so frustrating.

Gibo Teodoro as LAKAS Standard Bearer

National Defense Secretary Gilbert “Gibo” Teodoro is almost assured of the support of the entire administration party for his candidacy in the upcoming 2010 Presidential elections. The LAKAS national committee made a vote today after both Gibo and MMDA Chairman Bayani Fernando were interviewed about their platforms and plans. According to the article on Inquirer.Net, Gibo came out strong with 42 votes (out of 47). Fernando only got 5 votes. However this isn’t final yet since they may have to get the consensus of the entire party before they decide for good.

Just some thoughts to ponder on given this latest development:

- In the latest SWS survey, Liberal Party standard bearer Senator Noynoy Aquino topped the charts at 50%. Gibo wasn’t even on the list. Does he have enough time and charisma to win over the appeal of his cousin and against Cory magic?

- Based on his interviews, Gibo is fiercely loyal to GMA and her administration. Will he turn a blind eye to GMA’s alleged crimes when he gets elected? Will he support prosecution of GMA and her allies?

- Mindanao is a treasure chest of mineral resources that the Philippines can use to spur growth. As the Defense Chief, what measures will he implement when he becomes President on how we can finally stamp out terrorism in the south and make full use of our resources?

- If ever anyone from his family, staff, or friends reads this post, please do extend my offer to Gibo to organize a blogger event for him for free. He will just have to provide the venue and the food. You can contact me directly by e-mailing me at oplecarlo@gmail.com.

Another thought that comes to my mind is what will MMDA Chairman Bayani Fernando do? Will he bolt the party and run a campaign on his own? Or will he slide down and become the VP candidate for Gibo? If that’s the case, then how will DILG Secretary Ronnie Puno react? Interesting developments.

Korina Sanchez’s letter to RG Cruz

I don’t know if this letter is 100% true but it’s been circulating on Facebook for the past few hours. Apparently ABS CBN journalist RG Cruz has been saying negative things about his co-worker and senior: Korina Sanchez on Facebook. Korina picked up on this and wrote this letter in response because her friends were telling her about what RG was doing and saying. Based on the letter, RG Cruz called Korina Sanchez a “feeling First Lady” and he expressed that he was happy when he saw Mar announce his decision to slide down in favor of Noynoy. Thanks to Ding Gagelonia for sharing on FB and to Marichu Lambino for posting it on her blog. Hopefully we’ll hear from RG Cruz about this letter soon.

A LETTER TO MANAGEMENT AND TO ALL THOSE WHO HAVE TOLD ME OF THEIR KNOWLEDGE REGARDING THE FACEBOOK ATTACKS OF RG CRUZ AGAINST KORINA SANCHEZ

From Korina Sanchez

I thought, not too long but hard, about writing this letter about someone who I supposedly work with but hardly know — someone who, should I see along our company corridors, I probably wouldn’t even recognize. While some characters would sit back, relax and ignore the nuances and irritants of daily living, some characters such as mine are the types who would see and know, by experience if I may add, that evil prospers when good men do nothing. While there is wisdom in silence, there is nobility to be found in response and courage — as foolish as some might think these to be, given specific circumstances.

Such was my thought process when I decided to write this letter. As inconsequential to my universe as someone, whose opinion I do not care about at all, is — there is something to be said here and something to consider. It is for the greater good among us who, fortunately or unfortunately, have to work with each other in ABS-CBN for, precisely, the greater good.

I received the calls and texts to me from longtime co-workers and colleagues at the station recently. They say, “Ma’am, do you know what RG Cruz has been posting on his Facebook against you? Why is the company allowing this? How could he say such things? Do you have some war going on with him?”, the person at the other end of the line sounded so urgent. This is the 3rd person to tell me of the Facebook entries by an RG Cruz within a few days about a “First Lady wannabe …who would eventually be a bad spouse…a queen in her head without a crown… ” and some. We have copies of all of the RG Cruz entries on his Facebook. Suffice it to say that the tirades against who Cruz eventually admitted was Korina Sanchez were as creative as creativity can many times be

Borne of spite and utter, utter hatred. It reminds me of the creativity of serial killers from history. Jack the Ripper for instance — who kept the English police guessing and following and analyzing each way the pattern was kept alive with each of his dead, mangled victims.

I thought hard, “RG Cruz? RG Cruz…Oh…RG Cruz, oh that RG Cruz”. He always wears a long coat much like Keanu Reeves in the movie Matrix. I once thought it to be cute and fantasized my fiancé Mar in one of those wondering, “Hmmm, maybe this outfit would do it for him and give an extra 5 percentage points in the surveys”. Alas, we always have the same reaction to every idea — it is ability, track record, integrity, honesty, diligence, intelligence, compassion and vision that should bring an aspirant to his rightful place in history — stupid. Not long coats!

Back to RG Cruz. Yes, I remember now. RG is the cute little young guy who I actually kind of like. I thought from his outfit and from watching one anchoring job he did in ANC that this guy has character. We would often walk by each other going different directions in company corridors late at night when I anchor Bandila. Many of those times I try to catch his glimpse to smile but, for some reason, he always has his head down or he would look some other direction. Half of that time maybe it was I looking down and at other directions. In short, and as astonishing as it apparently is, I don’t really know nor have interacted or worked, nor do I ever remember having had conversation with Mr. RG Cruz. And I do not know where his concentrated anger targeted towards me is coming from.

Skin off my nose. He doesn’t count. But here is where we learn some things, yes, even in instances that should seem not matter. Sad as it is, it is not surprising that, in my experience of more than 20 years of work in the company, there may always be someone like RG Cruz who will just be the way they are without rhyme or reason. There have been many batches before RG that I have seen, suffered and survived. I guess he represents his batch. My advice is, ignore. And then, when you feel it has become too much, report to our superiors. If the regulations and the law warrants, push for management action, even a sanction, even a lawsuit.

Logic dictates that, just as we are all bound by regulations and ethics regarding how we relate and treat each other within the company, these parameters encompass treatment of each other that is public, evident, attestable. Facebook, designed as it may be for “friends”, is essentially public. Slanderous comments are, arguably, considered published. “Blind item” lawsuits have been won in Philippine courts as well. As long as more than a certain number of people can identify, without a doubt, the unnamed victim of slander and character assassination, the offense is actionable.

I, by the way, do not understand why Mr. Cruz would bother to not mention my cherished name in his attacks against me when he outright named another company talent, Mr. Willie Revillame, and attacked him as well.

In the interest of sound policy covering such misdemeanors to protect its employees and talents and maintain the civility required of us all to achieve company goals — as painlessly as humanly possibly — I have inquired with management and have urged them to take a closer look at the cyberworld as public domain and which is a potent instrument for destruction and unwarranted personal aggravation of its victims, especially in the hands of co-employees.

Lastly, but most importantly. It has been almost 6 days since Sen. Mar Roxas’ abdication of position of standard bearer of the Liberal Party of the Philippines to endorse Sen. Noynoy Aquino as party candidate for the Presidency of the Republic. I’ve seen it and felt it for myself: it is the easiest thing to have an ambition, calculate and run for office. It is the most difficult to want to serve, calculate, invest and then give way. Until you see and be, it would be a task for any jaded journalist to imagine.

The overwhelming outpour of love, grief, disagreement with the decision, admiration and emulation which followed Sen. Roxas’ example has carved a niche for his good name in Philippine history books this early in his life in public service and governance. I would like to thank many of you who have called to say how they’ve admired Mar’s sacrifice. To those who challenge the integrity of Mar’s sacrifice and may dismiss it as expediency I invite you to a chat as I might enlighten you on things you might not be fully informed about or aware of. I give special thanks to Ted Failon, Julius and Tintin Babao, the people of DZMM News, Joelet Reyes, the other staff of Bandila, Ging Reyes and Charie Villa, Ms. Cory Vidanes and our President Charo S. Concio for their kind and generous words.

Many of us in the news business have often thought, felt that we are as big or powerful as those we cover. Our indifference and sarcasm say so. And too many times I have, myself, dismissed acts of greatness and sacrifice as just “one of those things”. Having taken this long a leave of absence from my years of work in broadcast for the first time and finding myself participant in something so important to this country, its people and its future I now see even more clearly how small and insignificant each of us is in the much bigger picture affecting 90 million lives. That is, until we think, act, speak and, most of all, do something to become the difference, make a difference for the good and become … bigger. Or do something or nothing to make us even smaller, more insignificant. We might as well just disappear.

So to you, RG Cruz, I say, I hope that — as your Facebook entry narrated — as you were “eating chocolate” and indulging your gastronomical cravings while events at Club Filipino on the 2nd of September 2009 were unfolding and all you could think of and delight in, as written in your Facebook, are your cruel attacks, pettiness, inanities and insensitivities to the sacrifice of others and, horror of horrors, make these public — you will, henceforth, attempt to save yourself from the very real prospect of disappearing, leaving this world without a trace, no better and even worse than when you found it.

By the way, did you know that Jack the Ripper loved chocolates, too? Look it up.

KORINA

Source: Marichu Lambino

RG, would love to hear your side bro. It would also be good if someone from Ms. Korina Sanchez’s camp would confirm or deny this letter. I’ll hold my usual analysis and commentary since I respect and know both parties involved.
