Is it Villar-Legarda for 2010?

Ding Gagelonia reports in his blog, At Midfield, that the Villar-Legarda tandem for 2010 is already a done deal. According to his article, both parties will field a full slate from President to all 12 slots of the Senate. Ding goes on to explain that his sources say that this wasn’t something that they planned on. This was really something brought about by Senator Chiz Escudero leaving the NPC.

If I may quote:

My sources said “the event planners of NP standard bearer Villar wants to properly project the ticket as the alternative choice of voters against the perceived front-running tandem of SENATORS Noynoy Aquino and Mar Roxas.”

“NPC’s decision to finally link up with the NP was forced upon it by the surprise break-away last week of Sen. Francis ‘Chiz’ Escudero that left the NPC without a viable presidential standard bearer,” my sources explained.

Another source meanwhile said it had long been known that Sen. Legarda “was actively exploring talks to team up with either Sen. Villar and even Lakas-KAMPI-CMD standard bearer Gilbert Teodoro while insisting she was committed to pair with Sen. Escudero.”

“Her machinations have now borne fruit with Ms. Legarda fully shedding her posturing as being part of the political opposition against the highly unpopular Arroyo regime,” my sources told me.

“The Villar-Legarda ticket also shows Legarda’s party, the NPC of tycoon Eduardo ‘Danding’ Cojuangco revealing its true stripes as a traditional political party imbued not with a reformist agenda but one of ready accommodation with whomsoever protects its politically-sensitive business concerns.”

In terms of money, this has got to be the most well-funded ticket if ever this pushes through. Imagine the war chest of Villar combined with that of Danding’s? Scary thought.

Chiz leaving the NPC is a good thing

Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero announced this morning that he was resigning from the NPC. Initially I was shocked and I actually thought to myself “Is this guy insane?” I was wondering why he left the party seeing as that would be the foundation of his machinery and funding. However, after talking to some friends and reading entries of other bloggers, I realized that his decision to leave the NPC was actually a good thing and that it can pave the way for him to actually win the Presidency in 2010. Chiz Escudero Resigns from NPC

Senator Chiz Esucdero just resigned from his political party, NPC, this morning at Club Filipino. This came as a huge shocker since a lot of people were actually expecting him to announce his bid for the Presidency today. In fact, the original event was scheduled this evening at UP but was suddenly changed yesterday to Club Filipino.

So many thoughts about this but I have work, haha! Will write in a while during my lunch break.

Congratulations Senator Mar and Korina Sanchez-Roxas!

I’ve had the pleasure of serving under Senator Mar Roxas as his consultant for New Media. I can’t forget how intelligent, kind, and passionate this guy is. I really look up to him and his love for this country has inspired me in so many ways. I’d just like to take this opportunity to wish him well as he embarks on a new journey with his wife, Korina Sanchez. Mabuhay ang bagong kasal!

Vice Presidential Derby Heats Up

Today was a milestone moment in Philippine politics with regards to the upcoming 2010 elections. First, DILG Secretary Ronaldo Puno released a statement saying that he’s withdrawing from the VP run in 2010. Shortly after that, Senator Loren Legarda announced her bid for VP in Luneta under NPC which is reportedly fielding Senator Chiz Escudero for the Presidency. It looks like we will be having a Chiz-Loren tandem for the NPC in 2010. They’ll be facing off with Aquino-Roxas (LP), Teodoro-??? (Admin), and Villar-??? (Nacionalista).

Other than announcing her candidacy, she also shared her platform of government. Below are her major initiatives should she get elected:

• Gear public resources towards providing social services that all Filipinos can afford.
• Ensure the welfare of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).
• Crack down on corruption.
• Protect the environment and address the problems relating to climate change.
• Forge genuine peace, especially in Mindanao, by addressing the root causes of the conflict and seeking dialogue with armed groups.
• Rejuvenate Filipino culture.

Puno’s withdrawal from the race and Loren’s VP NPC declaration makes you wonder who the admin and Villar will get as their running mates. Here’s my guess:

For the admin, it will be Teodoro and Vilma Santos. For Nacionalista, it will be Manny Villar and Noli De Castro.

I’m Engaged! <3

As most of you have probably noticed, I’ve been on a pretty long blogging break. The reason behind this is I’ve been busy preparing for my wedding/engagement proposal to my girlfriend of almost 9 years. Last Sunday I finally proposed and it definitely was one of the most memorable and special moments in my life. I did it in public during our Sunday service at Victory Greenhills. Mich said yes and I’m now officially “engaged”! Fortunately a lot of people took pictures and videos and I wanted to share them with all of you now.

Here’s the complete proposal caught on video starting with our Pastor introducing me as a speaker to discuss the new Victory Greenhills website. After talking about the site, I showed a surprise video and then came out and popped the big question to Mich who was sitting in the audience.

In case you had a hard time watching the surprise video, here’s the complete vid which is now uploaded on Youtube:

And to answer why I decided to use “Falling Slowly” as the song, here’s a post that I made on Facebook. It also pretty much summarizes why I wanted to propose in the first place:

I wanted to write and publish this online because I didn’t get the chance to explain why we decided to use the song “Falling Slowly” during the proposal last Sunday. Personally the song has so much meaning for me and I’d like to share it with everyone.

The song wasn’t dedicated to Mich and it wasn’t even about me.

As most of you know, Mich and I have been together for almost 9 years. It’s been one emotional roller coaster ride for us. We’ve had so many ups and downs and we’ve almost called it quits on several occasions. However, the moment we finally accepted Christ and put God in our relationship, everything changed. When I say everything, I mean EVERYTHING.

I found out what it takes to be a real man – biblically and not culturally. This is the result of hours of talks with Bu and Atty. Ryan Tan and the rest of our men’s small group. Both of whom I consider my good friends, peers, and mentors in Victory.

I became conscious of my weight, and I wanted to make myself better for her. April and Alden provided me with so much motivation.

We found a way to settle our differences. It wasn’t anymore about if she’s right or I’m right, it’s about God’s standard. Having the small group with Pastor Dennis with the rest of the couples was such a huge blessing and inspiration for the both of us.

We both began to manage our finances much better – especially thanks to Randell and Pastor Chinkee. Mich even got a scholarship for RFP! Haha! :)

Our love for our own families were ignited again by seeing how the other families in church treated each other. This was a difficult challenge for me but I’m starting to finally get it.

Oh, I just have to say this but I don’t know if this sounds right, haha! Mich’s love for God right now is absolutely the sexiest thing I’ve ever seen in a woman. It’s the world’s greatest paradox. I’m madly in love with a woman who’s madly in love with another man (haha).

The song Falling Slowly is about how God courted me and Mich for the past 9 years. It’s about how he kept on making offers but we kept on ignoring him. It’s about how he’s been so faithful to us despite all of our misgivings and failures. It’s about how victorious we finally became when we accepted him into our lives and into our relationship.

I know that there will be more challenges along the way but God is bigger than any problem out there.

To all of you reading this, thank you so much for being such a blessing. :)

Just some other blogs on the proposal:

And here’s a link for more pictures on my FB page:

Thanks to everyone for the support and the love! I’m actually thinking of coming up with a wedding site for me and Mich but that’s after we sort out the wedding details, haha. Stay tuned. :)

Wowowee a campaign vehicle for Villar

Noontime show Willie Revillame is aggressively pushing for the candidacy of Senator Manny Villar. They’ve been going on a tour all over the country doing campaign mini versions of Wowowee which includes the singing, dancing, and giving away of money. There’s nothing really wrong with this but I think Willie crossed the line a bit when he decided to publicly push for Villar during a popular segment in his show, Wowowee.

As reported by Arnold:

What intrigues me the most is on how they played the game. The game includes different colored boxes. The contestant will choose a colored box that he will open later to know what’s inside the box.

The contestant chose yellow. Then Revillame commented, “Sigurado na kayo? Bahala kayo, kayo naman bahala kung sinong pinuno ang ilalagay nyo”.

To cut the other 10 minutes of “bidding” short — colored yellow box has a candle inside it. The contestant lost the game. Then he went to the box colored orange. Before he opened, he commented, “Kung ito lang sana ang pinili nyo…”, then an evil grin, “ito sana!” P525,000 — the jackpot price.

If you are familiar with Philippine politics and the colors the politicians use, you’ll know that Yellow is Noynoy Aquino and Orange is Manny Villar — his rumored partner in the coming elections.

Willie has every right to campaign for Villar but that should be outside his official work hours as a noontime show host. There’s a reason why we have anti early campaigning laws set in place. I personally find this to be an abuse on Mr. Revillame’s end because people watch his show not because of his political endorsements, but because they want to be entertained. He should stick to the entertainment part.

Rape as a Weapon of War

(Author’s Note: Don’t read this article if you have a weak stomach and if you’re not above 18). This is a very sensitive topic but I decided to push through and write about it. I was reading the Asian Tribune when I came across this article showing how several members of the US Armed Forces brutally raped, tortured, and abused prisoners during their stay in Iraq. Usually people will just dismiss this as rumors and speculation, but several pictures were leaked into the interwebs of the actual abuse. There are around 2,000 more pictures but they’ve been kept hidden by the US government for obvious reasons.

Rape as an interrogation technique?
According to the general who was in charge of the camp, the rapes and abuses happened only after a team composed of “successful” interrogators from the CIA, Military Intelligence, and private consultants, flew in to brief their team on new and effective interrogation techniques. These new techniques would make sure that the US soldiers would get all the information they needed from the detainees.

Here’s an excerpt from the Asian Tribune article:

At least one picture shows an American soldier apparently raping a female prisoner while another is said to show a male translator raping a male detainee.

Further photographs are said to depict sexual assaults on prisoners with objects including a truncheon, wire and a phosphorescent tube.

Another apparently shows a female prisoner having her clothing forcibly removed to expose her breasts.

Detail of the content emerged from Major General Antonio Taguba, the former army officer who conducted an inquiry into the Abu Ghraib jail in Iraq.

Allegations of rape and abuse were included in his 2004 report but the fact there were photographs was never revealed. He later confirmed their existence in an interview with the Daily Telegraph in May 2009.

The London newspaper further noted “graphic nature of some of the images may explain the US President Obama’s attempts to block the release of an estimated 2,000 photographs from prisons in Iraq and Afghanistan despite an earlier promise to allow them to be published.”

Maj. Gen. Taguba, who retired in January 2007, said he supported the President’s decision, adding: “These pictures show torture, abuse, rape and every indecency.

“The mere description of these pictures is horrendous enough, take my word for it.”

In April, Mr. Obama’s administration said the photographs would be released and it would be “pointless to appeal” against a court judgment in favor of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

But after lobbying from senior military figures, Mr. Obama changed his mind saying they could put the safety of troops at risk.

In May, he said: “The most direct consequence of releasing them, I believe, would be to inflame anti-American public opinion and to put our troops in greater danger.”

In April 2004, new photographs were sent to La Voz de Aztlan from confidential sources depicting the shocking rapes of two Iraqi women by what are purported to be US Military Intelligence personnel and private US mercenaries in military fatigues. It is now known, Cienfuegos wrote in May 2004, that hundreds of these photographs had been in circulation among the troops in Iraq. The graphic photos were being swapped between the soldiers like baseball cards.

War really brings out the worst in humanity. The US Armed Forces went to Iraq to “liberate” them and to restore democracy but these pictures show otherwise. The sad part is that I’m sure that there are a lot of good men and women in the US Armed Forces who mean well. However there will always be rotten apples in the basket, and what they do can easily overshadow the over-all good done by the group. Abuses like this will always happen during war and that’s why we should all do our best in making sure that war never happens because it opens up Pandora’s box.

I can’t imagine how the Iraqi prisoners might have felt… or feel up to today. The angels of democracy that they hailed and waited for turned on them with pitch forks and literally dragged them to hell and back. The lives of the prisoners who were abused in the detainee camps will never be the same again.

The consequence of the US war against Iraq is crystal clear. They’ve just inspired a new generation of Anti-US youth because of the abuse. If the goal of the war was to protect the US and to make it a safer place, I think they failed miserably.

Writing this article even feels a bit weird especially since the US President just won the Nobel Peace Prize

Villar Water Bottles & Noodles

A bunch of photos have been going around for the past few days on social networks (Plurk, Facebook, Friendster, and Twitter). It instantly caught my attention and I decided to post the pictures here for everyone’s viewing. During the height of Ondoy relief operations Senator Villar became controversial when his relief goods had a tag saying that it came from him. This sparked a lot of debates online and offline. It wasn’t just Villar though, even former President Estrada had relief good tickets with his face on it. That was just the beginning though… fast forward a few weeks, the old orange sticker with “V” written using a pen has transformed into a full line of Villar relief goods merchandise.

Ok lang ba talaga?
We go back to my earlier question if it’s okay to actually brand relief operations. Some people are saying that the effort and resources could have gone somewhere else that would have made a bigger difference in the operations. I’ve also read some bloggers and people on Facebook saying that the politicians are taking advantage of the situation to campaign and promote themselves for the upcoming 2010 elections.

3122713_c78582825c4cd0164ffc4ed2a0f74a13

On the other hand we have various groups saying that there’s nothing really wrong with it. Instead of zeroing in on those branding their operations while helping, they’re saying we should talk about the candidates who aren’t doing anything at all (which kinda makes sense if you think about it).

This puts politicians in a catch 22 situation wherein they can’t really please everyone. It’s a damned if you do, damned if you don’t scenario. I’m sure there’s a middle ground somewhere but they still won’t be able to get everyone on board. If you say you’re helping out, you’re politicking, if you don’t, people will say you’re not helping. Here’s another question that’s worth thinking about… if Ondoy happened like 2 years ago when the elections was far away, or maybe after the 2010 elections, would the people we’re seeing helping out now still pour out the same amount of resources in relief operations?

Just a thought I’d like to share – the true victory and triumph of the Ondoy tragedy wasn’t the help given by the politicians, it was the help given by the normal Filipinos who decided to take time out and money from their own pockets. These people had nothing to gain whatsoever and yet they still volunteered.

Aquino and Villar dominate latest SWS survey

In what could be described as ratings slaughter, Senator Noynoy Aquino reigned supreme in the latest survey published by SWS. He got a whooping 60%! Following him is Senator Manny Villar who posted +37%, 3% higher than the previous survey. It’s interesting to note that after 2 months since Tita Cory’s death, Aquino is still getting blessings left and right.

Here are the other candidates after Aquino and Villar:

Estrada (18%)
Esucdero (15%)
Roxas (12%)
Teodoro (5%)
Lacson (4%)
Fernando (1%)
Teodoro (1%)

It will be very interesting to see how Chiz will play his cards in the coming days.
