Globe wants you to spend for load over food

I read a very interesting entry from my good friend, Randell Tiongson. I understand that we all need to make our businesses and brands profitable, but I don’t think you should banner it in your PR for obvious reasons. In an interview posted on the ABS CBN website, Globe CEO Ernest Cu says that telcos face a lot of challenges (and that’s okay) but he says it in a pretty malicious way.

“It’s important to know how our prepaid customers think. If you’re a telco, how do you convince a farmer to spend his money on prepaid load over food? And how can you make him choose you over the other telco? How do you keep him spending? That’s where the challenge is,” Cu said.

Man. Poor farmer.

But the problem goes beyond Globe or telcos. Companies are coming up with more ways to get money from you because that’s the nature of the business. What’s important is that Filipinos raise the level of their financial literacy because at the end of the day the decision is still with the consumer. If the consumer keeps making the same mistake over and over again then the day will come that he won’t have money to put food on the table.

Mr. Cu, if you have a speech writer, fire his ass. :)
