“Cory is campaigning for us.” – Frank Drilon

I couldn’t believe that I read that line on a news article published on Inquirer.Net. I’ve always been one of the biggest supporters of former Senate President Frank Drilon. That’s why it was a bit of a shock for me to read his latest statement. I’m sorry but I have to disagree with the idea that the “divine hand” of former President Aquino is campaigning for the Liberal Party. In fact, I think it’s the other way around. The Liberal Party is maximizing the mileage it can get from the magic that Tita Cory left behind when she passed away.

Cory Aquino’s Memorial Service
This I think was the first sign that something was going on. During the memorial service, Senator Mar Roxas and members of the Liberal Party were clearly visible everywhere. I don’t mind them being at the event, since they were really close to Tita Cory when she was alive. However, going around and flashing Tita Cory’s “L” mark while shaking hands with everyone you could really felt like it was already campaign season.

I’ve worked with Senator Roxas before and I know that he wouldn’t stoop to that level. Maybe he was thinking it was harmless but it really left a bad taste on the mouth of a lot of people. I remember seeing a lot of comments on Facebook going around about this particular issue.

Ninoy Aquino Day Celebration
Another event that comes to mind is the recent Ninoy Aquino Day celebration just last Friday. According to the issue of the Philippine Daily Inquirer the following day, it was a Liberal Party political event, with the speakers talking about their endorsements of Senator Roxas and Aquino for 2010.

I don’t think that Tita Cory is behind all of this. Intentional or unintentional, the Liberal Party is squeezing all the juice that they can from this hoping that it will build momentum for them heading into the upcoming elections. I just hope that Senator Noynoy and the rest of the Aquino family aren’t affected negatively with this. I heard from several sources that Senator Noynoy Aquino is very sensitive when it comes to his family, especially with his mother. In fact, several presidential aspirants who went to the memorial service asked the media not to cover them, and they even went in the dead of night – around 1:00AM so as to avoid being seen.

Here’s an excerpt from the news article that I was talking about:

Drilon said he saw “the divine hand of Cory” at work. “She’s campaigning for us,” he said.

Indeed, he said the torch has been passed to the children of Ninoy and the late Senator Gerry Roxas, the most senior LP leaders before the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos declared martial law and suspended the Constitution in 1972. Mar Roxas is the youngest son of Gerry Roxas, the LP president at the time.

In his statement, Roxas said nothing will come of efforts to sow intrigue between him and Noynoy over who should be the standard-bearer in 2010.

“We will always be together through hell and high water,” he said.

In a phone interview, he said he and Noynoy have yet to talk about teaming up.

He said he was thankful for Noynoy’s statement on Friday that he was supportive of his (Roxas’) presidential bid.

Senator Drilon, you still have my support but I really don’t agree with your sentiments.
