Carlo Caparas to Run for Senator in 2010?

It looks like even movie directors are tempted to take a shot at the 2010 Senatorial elections. Carlo Caparas, a highly controversial figure due to the recent National Artist debacle, is thinking of running for the Senate in the upcoming elections. He announced this during the press conference of his latest movie “Pangarap Kong Jackpot Trilogy”. According to Caparas, he would stand on a platform of clean politics. He even likened himself to boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao when he said that he’s like Manny who has a genuine heart for service.

Give me a break. Being in the Senate is all about crating and debating legislation. It’s not a position wherein you just dole out cash to people in order to help them out. If Carlo Caparas does run, he will definitely not get my support, much less my vote.

I also find it weird that he says that he’s humble and yet he really went all out in defending his win in the recent National Artist Awards.

Here’s the official press release for your “entertainment”:

National Artist for Film and Visual Arts Carlo J Caparas hinted today on his plans to run for public office, possibly for Senator, in next year’s elections.

During the press conference for his forthcoming movie “Pangarap Kong Jackpot Trilogy” held at Best Western Astor Hotel in Makati City, Caparas said he is thinking of giving the Filipino people “clean politics for a change.”

“Sa inaabot ko ngayon sa mga pangyayaring nagaganap sa paligid ko, nakikita kong napakaraming mahihirap na pwedeng apihin ng mga nasa mataas na antas ng lipunan. Sa palagay ko, dahil sa maruming pamumulitika ng ibang mga kababayan natin, ang maaring iganti natin dun ay isang malinis na pamumulitika,” he said.

Caparas added that he could be the perfect public official because he is “nakahanay sa ibaba,” an allusion to his humble beginnings.

The controversial komiks writer-film director said his detractors “lie” and that “pinagtatahi-tahi nila ang mga salitang [kasinungalingan] na ginagawa nilang katotohanan.”

“[Kaya] kailangan yung mga tulad namin ni Manny Pacquiao… na malinis ang intension sa pulitika…” said he.

When asked if he is thinking of running for governor or congressman, Caparas quipped, “Palagay ko sa mas mataas na posisyon pa.”

If he does, Caparas said he would run as an independent candidate and not under the wings of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

My advice is for Mr. Caparas to stick to directing, despite all the controversy he’s in right now. Gunning for a senate seat is just political and career suicide.

Check the character, the competence and courage of the person. Why is he considering a senate post? What has he done for the greater if not significant portion of his life so far? Yes he may have the courage to face up to the challenge but how far will that courage take him? What motivated him to so consider running for a senate post, why not congressional?
Then again, how should the voting public see and appreciate his presentation of himself and his purpose? Our voting public, though growing in its discriminating capability, has not yet risen to that acceptable or desirable level. We are still greatly swayed by poll results not by what is RIGHT. Our choices are many times dictated by the expedient, the easy and yes even the ‘instant’. Call a crowd and ask them if they all want or prefer someone who would legislate to remove taxation and likely he’ll get the majority vote of the crowd which likely may not be as discriminating to understand that taxes are necessary for the government to exist. Call a crowd and ask them whether they will vote for a popular candidate raised by the poll surveys as no. 1 against a candidate who isnt in the top 5 of the poll surveys no matter how better desirable in character, competence and courage and most will go for the ‘winner’, whether he is rotten in character, sinister in desire or dubious in his dealings.
Educating the public (which includes potential candidates) in the proper way is a long term task which hopefully is not learned only during elections but more ‘in between’. We’ve gone a little above where we were a few years back, what with 1986, 1998, 2001 and 2004 and 2007 election experiences. Lets all do our part RIGHT, more work is needed.
