Brigadier General Danny Lim to Run for Senator in 2010

Another detained military man has thrown in his hat for the senate race in 2010. Brigadier General Lim, who’s currently locked up in Crame for the Manila Peninsula “mutiny” declared his intention to run while he was registering in his home province of Nueva Ecija. He hasn’t declared yet which party he will be joining but we can definitely expect the support of the Magdalo group of Senator Antonio Trillanes. I had the opportunity to visit Senator Trillanes and General Lim in Crame earlier this year. Let me just share with you guys my first impression of General Lim.

Soft Spoken, Gentle, and Fierce
I was really expecting both Lim and Trillanes to be towering giants with booming voices. However, I was really surprised at how humble and simple both men were during our meeting. Brigadier General Lim was a gentle talker with a very soft voice. However you can see the passion burning in his eyes and in his tone when he would talk about what he wanted to change in the country. He explained to me that he wanted to institute reforms in the military and he would really focus on stamping out corruption in the government.

Family Man
We also had the chance to talk about his family. He told us that one of the rare moments he cried was when he was allowed by the court to go to the debut of his daughter. This filled him with so much joy. It’s sad to see the politics has torn him apart from his loved ones.

Maybe if time permits and if it’s legal, we can have a blogger event for the Magdalo group. That would definitely be an interesting experience, don’t you think?

MANILA, Philippines — (UPDATE) Detained Brigadier General Danilo Lim announced Tuesday his intention to join the 2010 senatorial race after he registered as a voter with the local office of the Commission on Elections in his home province of Nueva Ecija.

“Today, I formally declare my intention to run for Senator in next year’s elections. My decision was brought about by my drive to pursue reform advocacies I have fought for as a military officer for the past 35 years, and, more importantly, to continue to serve my country and people,” Lim said in a brief statement sent to media.

A Makati court has granted Lim a two-day pass so he could register as a voter in his hometown of Solano.

“By doing so, I am hoping that I could help revive and unite the Ilocano spirit in the coming elections,” said Lim.

“In time, I would be asking for the support of not only my fellow Ilocanos, but all of our countrymen who have been longing for change,” he said.

Lim is detained at the Philippine National Police Custodial Center together with Senator Antonio Trillanes IV. The two led a failed coup in November 2007, after walking out of a court hearing and staying for several hours at the Manila Peninsula Hotel in Makati City.
Upon his arrival in Solano at about 10:30 a.m., Lim was greeted by about 3,000 supporters, including local officials and leaders of the private sector.

They chanted “Danny Lim! Danny Lim!” as he walked from the Heroes Memorial Park to the local Comelec office, about 150 meters away.

Accompanied by his family and supporters who packed the Comelec office, Lim was listed as voter No. 2106 in Precinct 102-A of Barangay Quirino at around 10:45 a.m. Tuesday.

Lim said he had received offers from various parties identified with the opposition to join their senatorial slates for 2010. With a report from Melvin Gascon, Inquirer Northern Luzon
