Normally I throw a fit each time I see politicians taking advantage of current events to promote themselves, especially with the 2010 elections just around the corner. This was my main concern when I found out that Jamby Madrigal gave away bracelets with her face on it during Tita Cory’s memorial service. However what if the packages being given away are for relief operations? Is it a problem if the politician were to brand it? I found this picture on Facebook showing a packed lunch with Senator Manny Villar’s logo and name on it.

Like what I said, normally I’d condemn stuff like this however I just can’t find it in me to do so. At this time wherein a lot of Filipinos are in ruins, every little bit of help counts. In fact, I’d love to find out which candidate didn’t contribute to the relief operations so I can make sure that he or she isn’t on my list come election day.
Since I can’t come up with my own stand on this yet, I’ll throw the question back to you. Do you think it’s okay for politicians to brand the packages they give out? Why or why not?

Carlo,
Direct your efforts at driving traffic towards relief websites and giving people information about where they can send their donations.
POLITICAL INTRIGUE CAN RESUME SOME OTHER DAY.
Have a heart. So many people are dead, hurting, and suffering.
Peace muna tayo, till we get everybody through this.
is this even verified? like the photo of mikey arroyo buying liquor- verified ba tong mga to?
It isn’t just relief packages. Entire relief operations have been “branded” too such as the “NoyMar Relief Operations.”
@Ma’am Rowie: Thanks for the comment! You’re spot on there.
@lester2k1: No official statement yet from MV’s camp.
@Pinoy Buzz: Point taken. I haven’t been blogging about it here but I’ve been pushing the info out through my social networks/SMS/E-mail. Haven’t been able to collate all the information for that since I was in Ateneo helping out (easier to post stuff like this ‘coz you just get pictures and upload). But I’ll definitely write something to help drive traffic to where people can give their donations.
I was knee deep in mud in Marikina. How was Ateneo? High and dry?
I don’t know what you’re insinuating with your comment but I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt man. Let’s not question each other’s contribution. We can all help in whatever way we can.
Ika nga sa comment mo “Peace muna tayo”.
It’s okey for me… as long as the relief goods reach the real needy. You can’t expect politicians not to be politicians even in times of crisis.
Being politicians is not just what they do… It is what they are.
i like what lester commented…it shows that some filipinos are thinking of equality and fairness…its easy to print out a politician’s name and stick it to a styro foam and claim that a certain politician is branding his donations…please do not get me wrong i am not pro manny villar, im still undecided on whom to vote…as lester said everything should be verified first..
i do not think that it was manny villar who placed the sticker with his name on the styro of food, anybody can do that. it was not even verified that it was him (or his volunteers). give him the benefit of the doubt, manny has always been ready to lend a helping hand to people in need, and does not advertise it. he does not need to, he is really sincere in helping people out. i am just saddened that people could easily jump to the wrong conclusion about him. i am just amazed that the people who did this (and i firmly believe it is not manny villar or his camp) can think of diabolical ways to disrupt a person helping out our fellowmen in times of need. instead of them putting their minds to helping out, they have the gall to do black propaganda and politicking and blame it on the candidate. from what i have heard/seen and known about manny villar, he is not the type of person to do such a tacky thing nor would he authorize such a thing. in fact, i was with the manny villar volunteers in WWC in shaw blvd. that is why i can honestly post that i do not think it was manny villar who did this. or thought about this or authorized this styro thingy. hindi ganun ang pagkakakilala ko sa kanya. if you notice i am only reacting now kasi i just got home from there. my two cents worth.
Hah! For the sake of the victims, I say let’s take this opportunity to see which presidentiables act with the greatest swiftness and efficiency in helping the victims. The more the merrier so that more can benefit. We can hash the numbers later.
Point is people are getting aid.
Later, we can burn the ones who didn’t do squat. Like certain possibly boozing foreign landowner politicos who didn’t do humanity a favor by spontaneously aborting prior to being born.
I wonder if there would be coffins donated by politicians with their name or pictures. LOL Kidding aside, i think it’s OK, because other politicians or even the government could take credit for it.
But atleast he helped! kesa naman dun sa iba na wala pake…
and are we sure Villar wants to put it in the styro? MAYBE not! sa plastic ng canned goods ok lang… but sa styro MAY ISIP naman siguro si Villar na wag ilagay dun…
parang same yan sa ABSCBN and GMA7 putting labels on plastics……
but bottom line at least tumulong sila. and nakakatuwa raming pinoy ang aware now at nakikialam at tumutulong!
Maybe before you start sowing intrigue, you should ask yourself if you are being so gullible and whether people might be taking you for a ride. You were one of the first to jump on that Jamby bracelet rumor and here you are riding it again, even though her office has stated that the bracelet was from an old campaign and did not come from them this time. Kay Villar naman, totoo man o hindi, ang tao na ang bahala doon. Like that Jacque Bermejo thing, the people who reacted so violently sounded as hateful as the original post, whoever the author truly was. Para ka lang intrigero at chismoso even though you purport to ask an innocent question (or however you wish to describe it).
As others have said:
Tulong Villar Rescue and Relief Operations
NoyMar Relief Operations
Team Kiko Relief Operations
If we criticize one we should criticize all.
Or alternately we can also just focus on whether they’re getting anything done to help the victims and WHAT they’re doing within their power to help the victims.
Hi Rowie!
“Like what I said, normally I’d condemn stuff like this however I just can’t find it in me to do so. At this time wherein a lot of Filipinos are in ruins, every little bit of help counts. In fact, I’d love to find out which candidate didn’t contribute to the relief operations so I can make sure that he or she isn’t on my list come election day.”
Maybe instead of listing who did what, I should be running a list of who didn’t do anything at all, hehe.
Cheers,
Carlo
In campaigns, maraming volunteers na sumasali. Pwedeng maglagay ang isang ‘hater’ para sirain ang taong kung sino man. Madaming supporters si Senator na nagbibigay din ng tulong. So, hindi natin alam kung kanino nanggaling yan.
… thanks
Meron din mga generous friends and mga nagdonate ng ready to distribute packed lunch, and we did not bother to check them kasi kailangan mabilisan ang galaw, so lagay lahat sa trucks. Meron din namang mga friends na dumretso na agad sa affected areas at tumulong in behalf of the good Senator. Shempre, tumutulong sila, hindi natin alam kung ano ang nakalagay sa mga pinamimigay nila.
It’s not the time to meddle in politics and magsiraan. Magtulong tulong na lang tayo para sa mga nasalanta. You are more than welcome to give donations and/or join us in helping the Ondoy victims. Let us spread love not hate
i think we need to verify this first before we give our comments. It would be unfair for Sen. Villar because he and his people are trying hard to help… If you look at the package, it doesn’t look like it came from his office. He has the budget to have his name laser printed in the styro.
Anyway, this is what I got from his blog in Facebook:
We have a rescue and relief operation ongoing. Our hotline is 0917 422 6800. For donations please send it to Worldwide Corporate Center, Shaw Boulevard, Mandaluyong City. FROM SEN. MANNY VILLAR’S OFFICE
It’s disgusting!
i agree with other comments here, if we criticize one, we should criticize all of them.
Have you seen ABS-CBN’s coverage of their repacking/distribution of relief goods? Nakabalandra ang ABS-CBN Sagip Kapamilya sacks! Even other politicians have their own “brand” of relief operations.
So okay, they’re all helping, we’re all grateful for that. But do they really have to announce it to the whole world?
Matthew 6:5
“But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing”
period. ^_^

Personally, I don’t like it but let’s face it, with elections around the corner, this is part of the ballgame. Ultimately, I would wanna know which politicians really contributed and which ones didn’t.
FYI, there’s this long time politician running for mayor of QC who goes around with his partner to survey the damage in QC, no problem with this but what is really downright pathetic is that they go around taking credit for relief goods that others give out. I think this is the worst.
It’s in bad taste but for the victims, every little bit counts. Keep it coming.
It’s really the private sector now front & center, support na lang talaga ang gobyerno. walang pera. What’s sick is that they’re even reluctant to give off some of their prok barrel funds to allow government to do more. GMA should actually just order that 1 million each will be diverted off their allocations towards relief & recovery.
Yes, politicians really do that for their own political benefits.
While those reliefs goods are all came from people giving charity. I myself am angry at why the hell is he taking credit for all those when its not even came from them!
That picture real or not, I am still dumbfounded as how much did that Villar paid a TV station to advertise his face!
If any of you like to know if that photo says is not real then I suggest some of you go there and check. No, I wont go there, I’m somewhere in Northern Luzon…and the next storm is going in our area…maybe if there will be relief goods here I would check it out.
